Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Biliary Ascariasis as One of the Major Causes of Biliary Obstruction in Bangladesh

Abstract:
This prospective descriptive study was conducted in department of Radiology and Imaging in Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and
Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) during the period of July 2004 to March 2005 among 50 cases of obstructive jaundice with the aim of evaluation of biliary ascariasis as one of the major cause of biliary obstruction. Among the causes of biliary obstruction, majorities were choledocholithiasis, cholangiocarcinoma, carcinoma of the head of the pancreas, benign stricture, GB carcinoma and others. A significant cause of biliary obstruction was ascariasis (8% in USG and 10% in ERCP).
